In 1985 the freehold fishing rights of the
river at the Great Manson Farm Estates was purchased with match funding
from what was then Sports Council for Wales.
The fishery has a natural stocking of
quality Chub, Roach, Dace, Perch, Trout and Grayling. The odd Carp and
Tench have been reported, but,it is assumed that these fish are a result
of previous flood damage along the whole river system. Statutory
seasons for game & coarse fish apply. The regime of the river is
such that it is susceptible to flooding in inclement weather and the
terrain is such that anglers should be physically able to gain access to
some swims. NO CHILD under the age of 12 YEARS can be admitted, juniors below 16 YEARS
must be accompanied by a responsible adult. All anglers should make
their own decisions about personal safety. The terrain is sometimes
awkward, but the specimen fish caught from some swims make the effort
One of the last projects involving the
Environmental Agency before their demise,was the removal of the weir at
the Forge and replacing it with a turbine and fish ladder. This feature
will no doubt enhance the fish population during migration from main

1. Directions from the shopping center ( Monnow street ) in Monmouth town.
Leave Monnow street and travel down Priory street to crossroads traffic lights - Turn Left at lights onto Monk Street / old Hereford Road (A466) towards Osbaston : - go to number 2. OR 1. Directions from roundabout on A40 at Monmouth.Leave roundabout and travel towards Monmouth townshopping center on Dixton road (A466). At the crossroads traffic lights turn right onto Monk Street / old Hereford Road (A466) towards Osbaston :- go to number 2. Then 2. Leave traffic lights - and travel down Monk Street for 175 yards. 3. Turn left up Osbaston Road. 4. Now use your cars trip meter - and stay on Osbaston Road for 1.4 miles AND STOP. THE CWMBRAN A.A. STRETCH OF THE MONNOW STARTS HERE ON YOUR LEFT HAND SIDE 22 YARDS AWAY - AND CONTINUES FOR 0.62 MILES (1065 YARDS). NB. Car parking DO NOT PARK IN FARM FIELDS, OBSTRUCT GATEWAYS, BLOCK THE ROAD OR PARK IN OSBASTON FARM BARN YARD. Remember this is a working environment for farmers with large machinery that use the lanes.
